| Farm
Camp is a two-week specialty farm education program for boys & girls. Each
session will host campers who will live and work together in a traditional agricultural
setting. Their days will be filled with farm chores, gardening, hiking, swimming,
farm crafts, fun-filled activities and being part of a farm family. Frost
Valley's goal for the Farm Program is to instill the values of caring, honesty,
respect and responsibility, through a farming lifestyle where we will work together,
providing care for farmlands and animals alike, within a safe, warm environment.
A sense of pride and ownership is cultivated, while making the farm our home
away from hom.
The
farm is located on the east branch of the Neversink River, in the peaceful Denning
Valley. Farm campers have the opportunity to experience farm life of the past
and present, where they explore the wonderful natural world of farm pastures
and gardens, old apple orchards, and forested woodlands. Farm campers
will live in yurts (traditional Mongolian dwellings-one for boys, one for girls)
in their own village unit at the farm.
Animals
Among
the animals living at Frost Valley's farm are: Pigs, chickens, sheep, rabbits,
goats, cows, horses and other birds. Farm campers will interact daily
with the animals, performing chores, learning how to care for them, and understanding
their importance in the ecosystem.
Activities
During
summer sessions, campers will reside in yurts and will be provided with a list
of day to day chores. They will also enjoy recreational activities including:
swimming, archery, horseback riding, games and hands on opportunities to learn
blacksmithing skills from our resident farrier.
Gardening
Campers
will learn how to prepare a traditional garden for planting, cultivating and
care of crops as they grow. This will include weeding, composting and mulching.
Campers will reap what they sow, including enjoying the fruits and vegetables
produced.
Staff
Our
farm is staffed by full-time farming specialists as well as seasonal summer
staff. Staff are chosen for their teaching and counseling skills; and
backgrounds in agriculture, natural and cultural history, and outdoor skills.
