Invasive Species

Introduced plants, animals, and insects that have been released into our ecosystems cause a number of detrimental impacts.  These are called non-native and invasive species.  Frost Valley YMCA is not immune to this issue and has taken on the challenge of keeping invasive species from being released and to eradicate existing ones.

Currently the Natural Resources Department is working to remove Japanese barberry from the understory of our forest.  This thorny shrub takes over the forest floor and shades out native plants that provide forage and cover for our native wildlife.

Frost Valley YMCA is also working to keep a nuisance alga from entering our rivers and streams.  This invasive is commonly referred to as Didymo.  If introduced it smothers streambeds and is detrimental for fish, aquatic invertebrates, and plants.  Please help us to keep Didymo out of our waters, by learning more about this invasive species.

An important note about our firewood: Guests will be provided a complimentary load of firewood at their lodges.  Additional loads can be purchased at Frost Valley.  Firewood from any source outside Frost Valley property is prohibited.  For more information on firewood regulations please visit dontmovefirewood.org
