Forest Management

Frost Valley YMCA actively manages its forests and natural resources.  The Natural Resources Department employs a full-time forester to ensure that our forests are managed sustainably.  Frost Valley manages its forest for recreation, watershed protection, diversity, timber, fish and wildlife, and aesthetics.

We believe that a properly managed forest is also a healthy forest.  Our forest management is governed by the Frost Valley Forest Management Plan, which includes an inventory of our forest resources and provides direction for sustainable harvest of timber from our forest.  Harvesting timber allows for an improved forest by removal of unhealthy and mature trees, thinning of the canopy, and allowing natural re-growth of trees.  This also provides diversity within the forest, which benefits wildlife.  In addition, visitors to Frost Valley learn about proper forest management when they visit the Frost Valley Model Forest
