Frost Valley 's Resource Management Center
(RMC) was dedicated in 1990 to monitor, improve and sustain the
health of our environment.
The
RMC was the first institutional-sized composting facility in New
York State designed to convert back into soil organic waste generated
in food preparation and as leftovers by campers and guests. This
organically rich "black gold" is then used to fertilize plants in
our greenhouse and garden, completing the cycle of growth, consumption
and regeneration by supplying vegetables and herbs for Frost Valley
tables.
The
RMC features an agricultural feed mixer where wood chips are added
to the food waste. Piles of processed waste are aerated from beneath
by fans. A rotating bin screens the compost after initial decomposition,
followed by a couple of months in outdoor windrows to complete the
conversion from garbage to garden variety compost.
The RMC includes space for processing and
bundling paper, cardboard, metal and plastic recyclables. It also
features a classroom, allowing students and visitors to see the
composting plant in year-round operation, learn about landfills,
and understand the individual's role in the waste reduction process.
