New Program Series: Spinning & Weaving
Instructor: Sharon Waltman
Level: Beginner
The following classes build on one another to make up a well-rounded understanding of spinning and weaving:
Spin-a-Yarn
Learn to spin using a drop spindle that you have made and decorated yourself. You will learn to create your own yarn from the processing of raw fleece through drop spindling singles and plying your own yarn. This class will include demonstrations of spinning on a spinning wheel.
Weaving on a Peg Loom
Create your own unique fabric by weaving using a peg loom. We will explore several, different types of weaving patterns. Your fabric pieces will then be assembled into a handsome, little notions bag. This class could also include a demonstration of weaving using a 4-harness table loom.
Weave-A-Pet
Use your imagination to weave a perfect pet, a perfect introduction using one of the most ancient weaving techniques. Backstrap weaving can be a bridge to larger projects such as belts, headbands and bracelets. In this class, a demonstration of card weaving (as in examples found ancient Egyptian tombs) could be done.
Dyeing with Kool-Aide
Experiment with color using Kool-Aide and a microwave. As you might imagine, Kool-Aide makes a very bright colorfast dye that we can use on protein based fiber such as wool, alpaca or silk. We will try our hand at dyeing fleece and yarn.
