11th annual quilting weekend

All-Star Lineup Ready To Instruct

At Frost Valley’s 11th Quilting Weekend

Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville, NY is making plans for its “11th annual Quilting Weekend” from Friday, Oct. 26-Sunday, Oct. 28.

Instructors for the weekend will be: Katharina Litchman (Featured Quilter), Kris Driessen, Sherry Sega, Bonnie Turner and Anne Foland.

Frost Valley’s 11th annual Quilting Weekend is designed for quilters of all ages and abilities.  Vendors offering an array of quilting products will have their booths open throughout the event. There will also be a “fabric swap” and group instruction. Evening lectures and opportunities for relaxation will round out the event.

Participants have the option of attending for the entire weekend or during attending workshops on a daily basis. Registration is limited.

Class descriptions follow:

Katharina Litchman of White Sulphur Springs, NY will teach “Art Quilting for Beginners.” This class will feature “a free and spontaneous play with fabric, color and shapes.”

Participants will cut out shapes and place them until the “canvas” morphs into a striking abstract painting. The pieces are sewn down and items such as beads, glitter, fancy thread, etc., are then added. This class includes a brief overview of quilting history, design principles and color theory. Basic sewing skills are required. Students will need to know how to use a sewing machine and bring their own machine. Maximum enrollment: 15 students.

Kris Driessen, a resident of Albany, NY, returns to Frost Valley to instruct a class titled, “H.S.T. Means Half-Square Triumphs.” This class focuses on teaching different ways to make half-square triangle blocks.  Students will be using TaDa triangles, triangles on a roll, “thangles” and triangle papers, as well as trying out several different rulers. This class will include a variety of projects that may be found at www.quiltbug.com/HST.htm. All levels of quilters are welcome. Maximum: 20 students.

Sherry Sega is another popular instructor at Frost Valley’s quilting weekends. “Dancing Feet” is the theme for Sherry’s class this year.

Get ready to dance the weekend away using your sewing machine feet,” is what Sherry tells interested quilters. She promises that this machine quilting class will have your feet dancing.  “Waltzing walking feet, bee-bop hop, square dance and the swinging stipple will all be part of this in-depth lecture and hands-on class,” Sherry explained. Students will need their own sewing machine. Maximum: 15 students.

Bonnie Turner of Clarksville, NY will teach a class called “Art Quilts: Quilting Out of the Box.”

This course will explore a variety of embellishing techniques used to create an art quilt. Thread work — both hand and machine — will be discussed. Participants will experiment with buttons, beads, crystals, ribbons and trims — limited only by their imagination. Class members may bring a pre-made top to embellish or just learn the techniques on a batik wholecloth. All levels welcome.  Maximum: 15 students.

Claryville resident Anne Foland returns to Frost Valley for the seventh year and will teach a class titled, “It’s All About Stars.”

This class features tips on making woven stars, eight-pointed stars using tri-recs, spinning stars and more.  An intermediate skill level is useful.  Patterns, ready-to-sew packets and fabric will be provided for a small additional fee.  Participants need sewing machines and supplies for machine. Maximum: 15 students.

Enrollment for this special Quilt Weekend will be limited and reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Accommodations this year will include Frost Valley’s new Lakeview Lodge, a state-of-the-art motel-style facility that offers “old-fashioned charm and modern comfort.” Program enrollment is $295 for double occupancy accommodations, $255 per person for triple occupancy or $340 for single occupancy. The registration fee includes all programming, meals and amenities. The rate for weekend day guests is $130 per person.
